2020-2021 Notice of AIS Process
The Norwood-Norfolk Central School District provides Academic Intervention Services (AIS) to students who score below the state-designated performance level on state assessments and/or who are at risk of not achieving the state learning standards as measured utilizing a variety of district-determined assessments.
Academic Intervention Services (AIS) means additional instruction, which supplements the instruction provided in the general curriculum. Academic Intervention Services are intended to help eligible students achieve the NYS Learning Standards in English language arts, mathematics, social studies and/or science. Additionally, students who are at risk of not gaining the knowledge and skills needed to meet or exceed designated performance levels on state assessments are required to receive AIS. These services may include:
- Additional instruction that supplements the general curriculum and/or
- Student support services are needed to address barriers to improved academic performance.
The intensity of AIS may vary; it is designed to respond to student needs as indicated through state and/or district, formal or informal assessments.
According to NYSED Reopening Schools Guidance, Academic Intervention Services, Students in grades 3-8, including students with disabilities and English Language learners, who are at risk of not achieving State Learning Standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and or Science are entitled to receive Academic Intervention Services in accordance with Commissioner’s Regulations section 100.2(ee). As the New York State Assessments in grades 3-8 were not administered in the 2019-20 school year, districts shall use a district developed procedure to be applied uniformly at each grade level for determining which students are entitled to such services. Districts may consider students’ scores on multiple measures of student performance, which include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following measures:
- Developmental reading assessment
- Benchmark and lesson embedded assessments
- Common formative assessments
- Unit and lesson assessments
- Results of psychoeducational evaluations
- Diagnostic screening for vision, hearing, and physical disabilities as well as screening for possible disabilities pursuant to Commissioners Regulations Part 117.
AID/RTI Criteria
Subject & Grade: All Subjects, K-12
Measures & Benchmark Criteria:
- Student attendance - High rate of absenteeism may be related to academic difficulty.
- Teacher Recommendation - Comments from teachers are considered in the overall evaluation.
Subject & Grade: ELA K-4
Measures & Benchmark Criteria:
- Classroom average - Grades K-4, level 3 or 4
- NYS ELA Assessment - Level 3 or 4
- Acadience Reading K-6 - Benchmarked three times a year. Progress monitoring conducted for students not achieving the benchmarks.
- Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessments - Benchmark 2-3 times a year. Progress monitoring is conducted for students not achieving the benchmarks. Interim assessments 3-4 times per year.
- ELA Assessments - Level 3 or 4
- iReady Reading Grades 2-4 - Benchmark at least 3 times per year. Progress monitoring is conducted for students not achieving the benchmarks.
- Writing Portfolios Grade - district-developed grade level rubrics
Subject & Grade: ELA 5-12
Measures & Benchmark Criteria:
- Class Average - Grades 5-8: 70%, Grades 9-12: 65%
- NYS ELA Assessment - Grades 5-8, Level 3 or 4
- iReady Reading, Grades 5-8 - Benchmark at least 3 times per year. Progress monitoring is conducted for students not achieving benchmarks.
- ELA Regents at Grade 11 - 65%
- Writing Portfolios, Grade 7-12 - NYS Writing Rubrics and district-developed grade level rubrics.
Subject & Grade: Math K-4
Measures & Benchmark Criteria:
- NYS Math Assessment, Grades 3-4 - Scoring level 3 or 4
- Classroom Average - Grades K-4, level 3 or 4
- Math Assessments - Level 3 or 4
- iReady Math, Grades 2-4 - Benchmark at least 3 times per year, progress monitoring is conducted for students not achieving the benchmarks.
Subject & Grade: Math 5-12
Measures & Benchmark Criteria:
- Class Average - Grades 5-8: 70%, Grades 9-12: 65%
- NYS Math Assessment, Grades 5-8 - Level 3 or 4
- iReady Math, Grades 5-8 - Benchmark at least 3 times per year, progress monitoring is conducted for students not achieving the benchmarks.
- Algebra and Geometry Regents - 65%
Subject & Grade: Social Studies 4-12
Measures & Benchmark Criteria:
- Grades 4-8: 70%, Grades 9-12: 65%
- NYS ELA Assessment, Grades 4-8 - Students who score at levels 1&2 on the assessment in Grades 4-8 will be identified to determine whether their performance on the assessment is attributed to difficulty in areas of social studies content, or reading and writing.
- Grade 10 Global Studies Regents - 65%
- Grade 11 United States History and Government Regents - 65%
Subject & Grade: Science 4-12
Measures & Benchmark Criteria:
- Classroom Average - Grades 4-8: 70%, Grades 9-12: 65%
- NYS Science Assessment, Grades 4-8 - Level 3 or 4
- NYS Math and ELA Assessment - Students who scored at level 1 and 2 on the assessment in Grades 4-8 will be identified to determine whether their performance on the Science assessment is attributed to difficulty in the areas of reading, writing or math.
- Physical Settings in Earth Science and Living Environment Regents, Chemistry, & Physics - 65%
