Steps in Financial Aid

1. File for a FSA Federal Student Aid ID. Both the student and one parent must have an ID. The ID is used to access features and sign FAFSA electronically. The FSA ID can be applied for while filing the FAFSA application or directly at: www.fsaid.ed.gov. You must have a full name, date of birth, and social security number when applying. In addition, you will need an email address. Parents and students must use separate email addresses. Once you have your ID, be sure to record and keep it for future use.

3. Complete the FAFSA form. Once you have completed the Federal Income Taxes for yourself and your parent(s), the FAFSA form should be filed. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. 4. Be sure you know the priority deadlines for completing the FAFSA. Many schools want this information very early. Getting your taxes done as soon as possible if most helpful. However, if it is not possible to meet the filing deadline with information from completed tax returns, it is better to estimate income than to miss the filing deadlines. As soon as I receive the FAFSA on the Web worksheets, I will be handing them out to you.

5.When you have finished the FAFSA, there will be a prompt asking you if you would like to file the New York State TAP application. You should follow the steps to complete the TAP form at this time.
